Name: Pender Rehzek-ken
Title: Sometimes refers to himself as Lord or Rehzek-ken
Gender: Male
Age: Unknown
Race: Human
Location: Sanguian
Occupation: Ex-Treasure Hunter, Presently a spy for a shadow group operating out of Sanguian
Physical Appearance: Pender is 7'3" tall and possess a wide muscular build. He has grey skin and golden eyes that shine in low-light situations, allowing him to see better. His fingers end with large sharp nails like claws that can rend stone and metal, and his physical strength is immense. He has similarly muscular legs, but other than larger toes for balance, nothing is noted about him. Pender lacks reproductive organs and glands. He often can be seen wearing linen slops that peak out near his feet and are held fixed by leather cords, and a vest that is too small to be done up, leaving his arms and chest exposed.
Personality: Pender speaks very proper words and sounds like an educated and refined man often, but he is never afraid to step over his bounds to accomplish a task. He has been around for a long time and has seen a lot of bloodshed over the course of his illustrious cloak-and-dagger career, and refuses to take a life if there is a reasonable way to avoid it. He drinks Grimroot Tea, a special blend that, when mixed with the right alcohol, enhances one's hearing, and often studies books on the Endbeast when he is not running or hiding. He acts in self-interest when he is not given a clear directive from higher up.
Strengths/Good Qualities: He is physically powerful and possesses incredible endurance, and does not require oxygen to live. He is self-interested, but respects other's self-interest as well and will not interfere with their goals so long as they do not jeapordize his. He has a soft spot for the young, and he often goes out of his way to make sure a child is not left in a situation that would cause them to wither away.
Weaknesses/Bad Qualities: Pender has a vicious temper, and often when he goes into a rage, he has trouble stopping himself from comitting acts of extreme violence and has very little self-control. He does not anger easily, but he is nearly impossible to stop. Pender hates the technologoies that are evolving in the world and avoids them, sooner to carve his way through a door than pick a lock, sooner to charge a turret and take the bullets than fire at it himself. He does not work well with others, even though he is trying to remedy that fact.
Character History: Pender is a lab project. He was created an unknown amount of years ago(unknown to him, at least) to resemble a human and fit in with the Changed, but was developed in order to be a powerful monstrosity that no one could stop. He was considered a failure, however, because they managed to give him too many human emotions and he wasn't nearly as powerful as they hoped. He was supposedly euthanized and dumped out a Portal of Banishment, where he was recovered by an RA liason bidding on refuse from the Guildspires. Presumed dead, he was reawakened and raised to believe he was merely a Changed, and was used to plunder other guilds' resources on behalf of the RA.
Eventually Pender grew tired of robbing Gangs and fighting his way home, and managed to convince his current handler of the time to give him a different project. He was becoming too well-known in the Underworld circuit, and his job was becoming more and more difficult. He was moved into the role of an assassin for a short period of time, but his penchant to being less discrete when it came to violence made him less of an asset for the job. He's spent the last decade or so on the backburner with his employers, being provided enough money to live but given few jobs, to let people forget his face and name and make him useful for spying and stealing again. Pender chooses to read and learn in his spare time, to convince himself that he is more than just a strongarm. (There is more to Pender's history and that of his brother, 'Frey', but it is something to be divulged in character. Joe and I have talked about this)
Belongings: A golden cylinder, which he claims(quietly) to be his personal access tool to a vast fortune that keeps him able to perform his tasks subtly. This fact has never been proven, and he has never used it.
NPCs: Pender keeps in touch with his contact, Jameson, regularly. Jameson is a quiet purveyor of knowledge, posing as a Priest/Healer in Sanguine's slum. He knows much about the workings of the city, and the movements of many things in the Guildspires. He claims his knowledge is divined from higher powers, but it is clear he simply has a huge information net that passes between the Underworld and Guildspires. He is a well-protected man, as well, and people who try and find out what he knows never see the whites of his eyes before he is out of danger again.
He has a brother, Frey, who also calls himself a Rehzek-kan. He is frail of build, but unlike his brother embraces new technology, weapons mostly, and is considered on of the most dangerous men in the Underworld. He travels light, but always carries the deadliest arsenal on him that can fit in a jacket. He occasionally interferes with Pender's operations, either deliberately or on business himself, but he is usualy too busy running up a body count somewhere to bother with his bro.
His handler, who communicates all details between his employer and Pender himself, is Shayna. She pretends to be very sweet and innocent around others, but always manages to leave subtle clues that she doesn't particularly value the human life and considers it just another statistic. She gives him his missions in private, and very rarely tells him how to accomplish his job, simply telling him what it is. She also manages his finances for him, an arrangement Pender is unhappy about, but has no choice in the matter. Pender suspects she works directly for the RA.
Sample of Pender's activities:
Another dismal evening loomed over Pender threateningly, as if someone held an axe just above his neck and was slowly lowering it over him. Most nights felt like this now; There wasn't much reason to sit here idly and wait for Shayna's communique, but he was a good little worker drone and so he waited...and waited...and waited. He was running out of books to read.
He looked up from where he sat in front of his shed that was called a house. It was a two room affair, one of which was a bathroom that was mostly too small to accomodate his massive build and height. He watched people passing through the streets, a group of three Changed together, one of whom seemed to have a large brown hump on the back of his spine, giving him the almost comical appearance of a turtle. His friends appeared to be brothers and their defining feature was red eyes and a seemingly genetic hairstyle, blond hair that seemed to make a sort of mushroom-cloud effect. The hair hung completely unaffected by the breeze that wound its way past them, eager to find release.
Pender sighed and got up, heading out into town after them. He would see Jameson, who would tell him if he had a meeting with Shayna, who would tell him that he was to stay low for a while longer, and maybe give him some money so he could keep himself fed and occupied while she led him around on his collar. He tired of this tedium, and was on the verge of taking matters into his own hands. The problem with committing acts of theft and violence when you weren't really given clear permission to do so is that you often gained a high-profile status and were imprisoned accordingly.
As he entered the low-lit Butcher's Bronco, a poorly named tavern with a seedy reputation, he was assailed by the soft murmur of the room. He drank Grimroot tea alot, a common tea mixed with alcohol to increase the potency of one's hearing, and so a soft murmur around the room was very similar to a room full of people talking normally. He frowned and made his way to the corner he usually sat in, but froze halfway there. In his secluded booth he could see a man sitting, staring at him with an evil smile on his face. Pender almost groaned audibly and resisted clenching his fists, lest they find flesh. No day was a good day when his brother was around. Pender turned and walked out the front door without a word.
-There's Pender. I'm still open to feedback, obviously, but I would like to use him in RP to reveal more about his strengths and weaknesses. A bio can only say so much, and I want to grow him as a character. This post made as of Feb 20, 2010.
